Journey
Tetu Shani is a Kenyan singer-songwriter whose work sits at the intersection of Alternative Folk, Afro Pop-Rock, Indie Rock, Urban Folk, and Alternative Pop. He describes his sound as Urban Folk, a blend of American folk, rock, roots, and folkloric rhythms drawn from Kenya, and performs across a range of instruments including guitar, percussion, djembe, and drum set. His multi-genre approach and ear for cross-cultural rhythm have set him apart within Kenya's independent music community.
Shani was active between 2019 and 2021, releasing music across a network of independent labels including Rainmaker Ltd, Sub Sahara, Snowball Industries, The Penthouse, and Kwetu Studio. His known catalog features “Life Before the Apocalypse,” “She Took the Keys,” “Risky Lips,” “Spend My Money,” and Just a Man a body of work that reflects the range of his genre interests, from acoustic-driven folk to rock-inflected Afro pop. Throughout his active years, he worked alongside some of Kenya's most respected independent artists: Mayonde on Chemistry, Labdi on Spend My Money, Fadhilee Itulya on both The Void and Asante Sana, and Chemutai Sage on Legend. These collaborations underscore a consistent commitment to working within Kenya's broader alternative and indie ecosystem rather than in isolation.
Shani's recognition from the global and regional music community arrived both before and during his active period. He earned a Bronze Medal at the 2015 Global Music Awards for Round and Round, followed by a Silver Medal at the 2017 Global Music Awards for Samalina, the latter awarded for outstanding achievement. That same year, he received the Best New Age Contemporary Artist award at the Cafe Ngoma Awards. He was nominated for East African Male Musician of the Year at the 2016 Kenya Buzz Awards, a recognition that placed him among the leading male artists across the region at the time.
With a catalog built across multiple independent labels, a track record of collaborative releases, and award recognition spanning international and regional platforms, Tetu Shani represents a thoughtful and genre-fluid voice in Kenyan alternative music.
